A guide on how to prescribe regular, long term medication and where to find them in SystmOne.

NB: if you accidentally selected acute medication, you can amend this in the browser — please see How to Prescribe Acute Medication.

Find Repeat Prescriptions (Repeat Templates) in the Clinical Tree

1. Click 'Repeat Templates' in the Clinical Tree (sidebar) to view Repeat Prescriptions (Repeat Templates).

2. Right-click 'Repeat Templates' and select 'New Repeat Template' from the context menu.

3. In the browser, select the appropriate medication.

⚠️ Always follow local or national guidance on prescriptions.

💡 OptimiseRx may suggest changes to medications — it will flag safety issues or contraindications, suggest more appropriate or formulary-preferred alternatives, prompt monitoring or co-prescribing (e.g. gastroprotection), and nudge towards lower-cost but clinically equivalent options.

4. Click 'Ok' to acknowledge the clinical warning message.

5. Optional: If the drug appears in more than one formulary, select the one you want, then click 'Ok' to confirm medication details.

6. ‼️ Check the dosing, duration and quantity before prescribing ‼️

7. ‼️ Check the patient-specific warnings and contraindications at the bottom of the page ‼️

8. Optional: Add script and administrative notes as necessary.

9. Click Ok once satisfied with the prescription.

10. This warning will appear if you have not linked a prescription to a diagnosis (e.g. citalopram for depression, statins for hypercholesterolaemia, PPI for GORD).

11. To link to a Read Code / diagnosis: click here.

12. Select the diagnosis from the list.

13. Click here to confirm.

14. The linked diagnosis now appears in the right panel.

15. It is best practice to link prescriptions to their corresponding diagnosis.

16. Click here to accept the prescription.

17. Click here to proceed.

18. Your Repeat Prescription (Repeat Template) will now appear in the Repeat Templates.

How to issue a prescription

⚠️ All prescriptions must be issued in order for the patient to be able to collect them from their pharmacy!

💡 Complete all consultation actions before issuing any medication. When you save and close a consultation containing a prescription, the option to issue will appear automatically.

⚠️ You must SAVE the record otherwise all your work will be deleted!

19. Click here to save your prescriptions.

20. To ISSUE the medication to the patient: select yourself as the authoriser, then select 'Print/Sign and Send Now'. Optionally: confirm the pharmacy is correct with the patient.
