This guide explains how to record a hospital-issued medication so it cannot be dispensed by primary care, ensuring safe, auditable prescribing within the system.
Overview of Check Points
1. Check these 8 sections of the prescription are filled in correctly.
Template Initialisation
2. Select "Repeat Templates" from the navigation menu.
3. Click the "Set up a new repeat template" icon.
4. Double-click the desired medication from the search results.
5. Select any option, then click "Ok".
6. Read and click "Proceed" to acknowledge the medication warning.
⚠️ This will appear when prescribing specialist medications. Do NOT prescribe specialist medications unless specified by a clinic letter.
⚠️ Reminder: do NOT prescribe any controlled drugs.
Writing the prescription
7. Write or copy into the Dose box:
HOSPITAL ISSUED MEDICATION - please do NOT issue from GP
8. Set Number to 1 (one).
Create Preset
9. Create a Preset.
10. Click here to add a new Preset (or if one already exists, select the "Hospital only" preset).
11. Type or copy in the following text, then select Ok:
HOSPITAL ISSUED MEDICATION - please do NOT issue from GP
12. Select the Preset and click Ok.
13. Repeat the steps to create a Preset for both Script notes and Administrative notes.
⚠️ Write "HOSPITAL only" in BOTH Script and Administrative notes.

14. Set issue duration to 1 day. Set Use Review Date to current date.
15. Disable BOTH: "Patient can initiate issues" AND "Repeat template can be reauthorised".
Finalise and Save
16. Check these 8 sections of the prescription are filled in correctly.
17. This error message will appear if the prescription is not linked to a problem. Always link any prescription to its corresponding diagnosis / Read Code.
18. Accept this error message.
19. Click here to save.
